When winter comes, some people refer to this weather as the harbinger of cold and flu. But, it is true that respiratory infections like cold and flu mostly occur during the winter months. At this time, the cold temperature is a breeding ground for many viruses, and these viruses cause colds and the flu.
If you have a cold, you’ll probably have symptoms like the following:
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Sore throat
- Mild headache or slight body aches
- Mild tiredness
- Low-grade fever
Common signs and symptoms of the flu are the following:
- Dry, Continuing cough
- Moderate to high fever
- Sore throat
- Fatigue and weakness
- Nasal congestion
- Sore throat
- Stuffy and runny nose
- Shaking chills & sweats
- Severe muscle or body aches
With some medication, you can take some precautions to slow the spread of cold viruses. Here are a few things which you can do to protect yourself from these common diseases prevalent in winter.
Spend Some Time in The Sunlight:
The lack of sunlight is also a contributing factor for the people to get sick. Sunlight is a good source of Vitamin D and also responsible for producing melatonin in our body. Melatonin is a special type of hormone which is generated in the pineal gland, which is responsible for maintaining the body’s internal clock and sleeping pattern. So, it is a must; otherwise, people will have insomnia in winter.
Clean Your Hands Before and After Eating:
Throughout the day, we touch too many things containing various types of germs. These germs can bind themselves to items more tightly in the winter season than in any other. When we touch the contaminated objects, the germs present on it get itself attached to our hands and when we put our hand in our mouth. The germs enter our bodies and make us sick.
So, it is advisable to always wash your hands without fail to keep yourself fit and healthy. Use hand sanitizer as it has a good and effective solution for eliminating germs from the hands.
Drink a Good Amount of Water Daily:
Drink at least 8-10 glasses of a bottle daily to keep you hydrated throughout the day. The ample amount of water in your system will wash away all the bad disease-causing toxins from your body and provide a safeguard against them by improving your immunity power, and it also purifies the blood. A healthy immune system ensures a good production of white blood cells, which is crucial for fighting off foreign infection in the body.
Have a Good Diet Plan:
Eating a healthy diet work wonders on your health. Include various components in your daily diet that will improve your immunity levels like Zinc and various types of food products containing a high proportion of Vitamin C and Vitamin D to ward off disease-causing germs.
For Zinc, eat various food products like oysters, spinach, pumpkin seeds, nuts, mushrooms, and dark chocolate, etc. For nutrition like Vitamin C and Vitamin D, eat the following food items like Broccoli, Cabbage, Sprouts, Lemon, etc. in your diet. Eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables can help support your immune system in winter.
Get a Good Sleep:
We use our brain all day long to do various daily tasks and put our mind and energy into various things, both work-related and personal too. Doing these tasks all day long makes us tired, and we need to take rest & recharge our minds. A person must need at least 8 hours of sleep to function properly and efficiently.
Some of the studies have shown that when we don’t take an ample amount of sleep, our T-cells count goes low. T-cells are crucial for the proper function of white blood cells, which in turn helps to boost our immunity. So, to keep the T- cell count up, take a good sleep.
Getting a Flu Vaccine:
If you are planning on traveling around the world this winter, then it is highly recommended that you must get vaccinated just as a precaution to ward off from the disease-causing bacteria. When we travel from one country to another, we make a shift from one climate to another too. Due to this, some germs which are active in tropical areas might attack you and make you sick, but if you go all prepared, then the vaccine will keep you at bay and wards off any infection. Pregnant women should get a flu vaccine to protect themselves and their babies from the flu.
Wear a Mask or Use Tissues While Visiting Public Places:
Try to wear a mask while visiting a public place like a bus full of passengers, hospitals, or other social gatherings where there is a chance of catching an infection. Wear gloves to touch suspiciously contaminated things like public urinals, bus seats, etc. If a person is sick, maintain a proper one hand distance from him/her and try to cover your mouth from a handkerchief or mask. Also, carry tissues to sneeze and cough easily. Trash used tissues right away, and then washes your hands carefully.
Don’t Touch Your Face or Eyes:
Your nose and eyes are the most common places for germs to get into your body, so it’s best to avoid touching your face until you’ve washed your hands.
Working out regularly – whether it is yoga, gym, or Zumba. Regular exercise enhances immune function, which can help your body fight off any cold or flu germs.
Soothing Your Throat:
A saltwater gargle from warm water can temporarily relieve a sore throat or persistent coughing. Saltwater reduces phlegm and mucus in the throat which can lessen the need to cough. Gargle with salt water several times each day until the cough improves.
